The study of the mind has always been one of the main preoccupations of philosophers, and has been a booming area of research in recent decades, with remarkable advances in psychology and neuroscience. Oxford University Press now presents the most authoritative and comprehensive guide ever published to the philosophy of mind. An outstanding international team of contributors offer 45 specially written critical surveys of a wide range of topics relating to the mind. The first two sections cover the place of the mind in the natural world: its ontological status, how it fits into the causal fabric of the universe, and the nature of consciousness. The third section focuses on the much-debated subjects of content and intentionality. The fourth section examines a variety of mental capacities, including memory, imagination, and emotion. The fifth section looks at epistemic issues, in particular regarding knowledge of one's own and other minds. The volume concludes with a section on self, personhood, and agency. The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Mind will be an invaluable resource for advanced students and scholars of philosophy, and also for researchers in neighbouring disciplines seeking a high-level survey of the state of the art in this flourishing field.
The management of small water supplies presents a unique challenge globally, in countries at all stages of development. A combination of lack of resources, limited understanding of the risks and poor expertise means that individuals and communities may face serious health risks from these supplies. This is not only due to microbiological contamination, but also from contamination by metals, either due to natural or man-made contamination of the source water or through leaching from plumbing materials due to inadequate conditioning and corrosion inhibition and use of inappropriate materials.
This Best Practice Guide aims to share best practice and experience from around the world on a practical level. It looks at general issues relating to small supplies and ways of managing these, adopting a Water Safety Plan approach to deliver sound and lasting improvements to quality. Management techniques and treatment relating to specific metals will be covered, from a theoretical and practical perspective, to deliver a publication that will act as an authoritative guide for all those faced with the problem of ensuring the quality of a small water supply. Varied case-studies will help to illustrate issues and ways in which they have been resolved.

Felix Martin, The Financial Times
«Potente y cautivador. Philip Aldrich, The Times
David Smith, The Sunday Times
Jared Bernstein, The Washington Post
«Ágil y adictivo. Una investigación maravillosamente cosmopolita.» Adam Tooze, The Guardian
«Excelente. Rohan Silva, The Evening Standard
New Internationalist
«Magistral.
Molecular Biology of Cancer: Mechanisms, Targets, and Therapeutics offers an accessible, engaging, and optimistic account of cancer biology for undergraduate and graduate students.
Using the hallmarks of cancer as a starting point, the book looks at the cellular and molecular mechanisms underpinning the transformation of cells into cancer cells. After discussing the theory, each chapter then demonstrates how this knowledge can be directly applied to the development of new targeted therapies, giving the reader a clear appreciation of how the theory translates to tackling the disease.
Drawing on the latest research in this dynamic field, the author makes cutting edge science readily accessible. The book features a variety of learning features - 'Pause and think', 'How do we know that?', self-tests and activities - to help students engage with, and master, the concepts presented. The emphasis is not on exhaustive coverage of the subject to the point of overwhelming with detail, but on acquiring a solid understanding of the essentials and an appreciation of how a theoretical understanding can be transformed into therapeutic benefit.
Online Resource Centre
The Online Resource Centre features:
For registered adopters of the book: - Figures from the book, ready to download. - A test bank of multiple choice questions, with feedback linked to the book.

Excerpt from Milk: The Food of Foods Most children like to drink milk, but occasionally a child has a dislike for it. Then the mother is confronted with a real problem, for a milk appetite must be created by preparing it in appealing ways. With younger children good results may be obtained by allowing them to drink the milk through a straw or by changing the appearance and flavour of the milk by making special milk drinks. Stories about athletes and peo-ple who drink milk to grow strong appeal to children and are effective. Children like to be independent, and allowing the child to use his own pitcher and glass may have the desired result. For children who refuse to drink milk in any form a considerable amount can be incorporated in the child's diet by regularly serving cereals cooked in milk, vegetables, fish, chicken and meats with cream sauce, eggs poached in milk, milk desserts and cream soups. The recipes which follow give directions for making only a few of the countless number of nourishing foods and drinks which may be prepared with milk. In addition to these types of dishes, an appreciable amount of milk can be included in the meals by using it in cooking fish and meats, in making gravies and in baking bread, biscuits and cakes. In many of the recipes skim milk may be used in place of whole milk, adding butter if desirable. Evaporated milk and milk powder may also be used by reconstituting these manufactured products to fluid milk - the proportions to use are 1 cup of evaporated milk. In April 1956, a refitted oil tanker carried fifty-eight shipping containers from Newark to Houston. From that modest beginning, container shipping developed into a huge industry that made the boom in global trade possible. The Box tells the dramatic story of the container's creation, the decade of struggle before it was widely adopted, and the sweeping economic consequences of the sharp fall in transportation costs that containerization brought about. But the container didn't just happen. Its adoption required huge sums of money, both from private investors and from ports that aspired to be on the leading edge of a new technology. It required years of high-stakes bargaining with two of the titans of organized labor, Harry Bridges and Teddy Gleason, as well as delicate negotiations on standards that made it possible for almost any container to travel on any truck or train or ship. Ultimately, it took McLean's success in supplying U.S. forces in Vietnam to persuade the world of the container's potential. Drawing on previously neglected sources, economist Marc Levinson shows how the container transformed economic geography, devastating traditional ports such as New York and London and fueling the growth of previously obscure ones, such as Oakland. By making shipping so cheap that industry could locate factories far from its customers, the container paved the way for Asia to become the world's workshop and brought consumers a previously unimaginable variety of low-cost products from around the globe. Published in hardcover on the fiftieth anniversary of the first container voyage, this is the first comprehensive history of the shipping container. Now with a new chapter, The Box tells the dramatic story of how the drive and imagination of an iconoclastic entrepreneur turned containerization from an impractical idea into a phenomenon that transformed economic geography, slashed transportation costs, and made the boom in global trade possible.
